So We Meet Again

It is starting to become a love story between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. You have two teams that are on a collision course to have a rematch that just about everyone had expected and face off in a repeat of last year’s NBA finals match up. (Side note, the Heat have made it  the finals the last 3 years in a row, and barring a monumental collapse, will be the second team in NBA finals history to make it to the finals 4 years in a row behind the Boston Celtics who went 8 consecutive times.) So who do I believe will win it? That’s a tough question because both teams have a strong case going for them.

Why the Spurs would win:

No team has been to the finals more frequently than the spurs in the past 14 years. Greg Popovich and has had the core of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginoboli for a large chuck of it. If there is a book on consistency then Greg Popovich has sold the movie rights for it because year in and year out he always has his team performing at an extremely high level and usually a dark horse when they make it deep in the playoffs. What even more interesting is how versatile the Spurs are. Do you know what the average age of the players on the Spurs roster this year is? 28.5 years old. That is not too bad considering that I was going to assume the average age was around 100 years of age. You want to know who is the oldest? Does anybody want to take a guess? The Miami Heat you say? well i say you are correct! At 30.3 years of average age. So be impressed that Greg Popovich can take basically any player and maximize their potential just by giving them one of his patented yet endearing cold stare.

In all seriousness the spurs are number one in assists this season and play great team defense. They also have the ability to shoot the lights out with their high field goal percentage.  That is how you get to the finals, and that how they can win it.

Why the Heat would win:

If I attend Kevin Durant’s MVP award press conference I would have  pulled a Kanye  and been like ” Yo, Kevin, I’m really happy for you, I’ma let you finish, but Lebron is still one of the best players of all time! One of the players of all time!” because its true. No disrespect to Kevin Durant. He worked hard this year and I applaud him for it. Do you guys know that Lebron shot 57% from the field this year? that is nearly 60%. KD shot around 50%. Make no mistake about it, Lebron James is still the number one player in the league. He can facilitate, he is tenacious on defense,  can shoot and worse of all, he will murder you on the fast break. He is just about every coaches nightmare. Oh yeah lets not forget that Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh are on the team as well.  Coupled with Ray Allen and the defense the team plays, It hard not to like the Heat. The one this that they have that the Spurs do not is somebody to take over a game when it is needed. It is also going to come to down how well the heat’s bench perform because they are the x factor.

Who comes out on top?

you can’t make this stuff up. It is like these two teams are destined to meet again. I am going to have to be honest here and say that I believe the Heat will win the Championship. Here is going to be my driving argument. As Lebron’s hairline recedes his powers seem to grow.

More importantly Lebron James ladies and gentlemen. You don’t have to love him. You have to like him. The one thing you have to do is respect him. Remember when he was in Cleveland and his motto was “Witness”? Well witness greatness in its prime. To me, to not pick the Heat to win the finals is because of personal vendettas and public disapproval for Lebron. Hell I am not a huge Lebron fan either. But I acknowledge his level of play and  no other player, not even Kevin Durant, comes close. (KD can’t play defense so don’t even go there with me) The series will go back and forth. There will be highs and lows. The world will yet again have all eyes on Lebron. To me what impresses me about Lebron is that year after year we all expect Lebron to fail, and he has proved us all wrong year after year. At this point disapproval of Lebron is starting to sound like the flack Kobe received not that many years ago.

The Spurs are a great team. But the Heat love to play to the level of the team they are playing against. Not to mention that while older the Heat are a way better fast break team then the Spurs and a huge reason why the Heat are so feared. So I am calling it here, Miami heat in 6!

  1. Great stuff, AJ! I run the Yardbarker/Foxsports syndicated site and I was wondering if you and your team would be interested in contributing to the site in some capacity. If you’d like to hear more, shoot me an email at derek (at) nocoastbias (dot) com. Thanks!
